Canadian beauty, Kainaaz  Parvees who first dabbled in TV(Babul Ki Duaye Leti Jaa, Dial 100 and CID) and cinema(Khamosh, Ghutan and Escape >From Taliban)  but failed in both, is now trying to reinvent her career by featuring in a T-Series music video, besides which she is also producing and acting in a movie and a TV show. We caught up with this good looking actress for frank tete – a – tete on her new attempt at success.
 
Q-You are featuring in Bonnie 7 as an Arabian dancer? How was the experience?
A- (Laughs) It’s not just Arabic dance, I have done some Indian dancing as well. It was a great experience. Further, since it was shot in the desert of Dubai, it was an inspiration all together.
 
Q-Why is it that your bollywood acting career never took off?
A-I wouldn’t put it that way. I have done some good films (Dil Ne  Jisse Apna Kaha with Salman Khan  and Ram Gopal Verma’s Mr. Ya Miss with Aftab Shivdasani, ), they did not do well is a different story.  Have not many of today’s well known stars also struggled in their earlier days?  So I guess my time is yet to come.

Q-Do you think this album will re-launch you?
A-I don’t think this album will re-launch me, but yes, it will give me a huge platform. I am thankful to T-Series or promoting it so well.

Q-You have featured in other albums as well. Can you take us thro’ them?
A-The first was Harry’s Bonfire Party , which had the song Mehbooba from the film Sholay. Then came, Come To The Dance floor on Jumme Raat which had the song, Yeh Din Toh Aata Hain Ek Din Jawani Mein from the film Mahaan.. These were all remixes and even Bonnie 7 is a remix and the song is Inhe Toh Lut Liya Milke Husn Vaalo Ne.

Q-How much importance do you give to music video’s in the launch of albums?
A-I think the backbone of all music albums are their music videos, because it’s the visuals that bring life to the audio track.
 
Q-Don’t you think most music videos are pretty provocative?
A-Well, I think we should not be hypocrites and accept the fact that this is exactly what today’s audience want to watch.  If your video is not provocative, then why have one? I am sure lot’s of people would agree with me, or else why would 90 percent of music videos, be shot that way.

 Q-Will this album not hamper your growth as an actress, for nobody takes item girls seriously?
A- I really don’t think so, since top notch actresses of today are also doing the so-called item numbers.  ‘Item girl’ is not a right word to use for anyone. We are all performers and I think people need to respect that.

Q-You are producing an untitled film with Anant Mahadevaan, who also directed Bonni 7 . Tell us something on this.
A-Yes, we are doing a comedy. It’s my script and with Anant’s help, this film will surely do wonders. I have cast Jimmy Shergill opposite me. I could never think of any other options besides him.

Q-You began with TV, but migrated to cinema and now returning to produce and act in a TV show as well, isn’t it? 
A-Yes, I started with TV and moved on to cinema.  Entertainment   is my passion, so I don’t really get weary of this and try to make the most of it. Talking of the soap opera, I am producing a 26 episode soap, which will have renowned Indian and Pakistani actors. It’s going to be on a big scale. I do not want to give any more details, since we are only in the pre-production stage.

The gorgeous Tapur Chatterjee is known for her panache on the ramp. The one of a kind lady who recently made her TV debut got out of the Sony show ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’ with regrets not for herself but for her choreographer Feroz who had waited for six long years for a platform. In the midst of the busy Lakme Fashion Week schedule, she managed to take some time out to share her style quotient with us.

Q: What is fashion according to you? 
A-I guess it’s more of a state of mind.

Q: Where do you mostly shop from? 
A- There are no hard and fast rules as such. It depends on what I like at some specific point of time.

Q: Any brands you prefer?
A- I like Mango. It’s casual and cheap. But then I am not hell bent on that either. 

Q. While at home, you mostly wear..
A-I mostly wear cottons at home.

Q- Your gym wear is like…
A- It would be track pants and a singlet in some nice colour.

Q. Do you go for the formal look at times?
A-Yes, I do. But it’s mostly the classic formal look.

Q. What’s your casual look like?
A- Its mostly a jeans and a nice top. It might also be an A- line dress. 

Q- What do you prefer for evening wear?
A- Again it would be a good dress or a pair of jeans and a fully fitted top.

Q-What about night wear?
A-It is something comfortable in satin or cotton.

Q: Do you adorn yourself with accessories? 
A- Yeah I do like some accessories. I prefer to use those special ones.

Q: Which brand do you favour for footwear?
A- Again no brands as such. Anything that looks good and which I am comfortable in.

Q-Must haves in your makeup kit …
A-It would be a light colored base. Fresh Blush, mascara and two- three shades of lipstick.

Q: Which is the latest perfume that you bought?
A- Carolina Herrera’s Chick

Q- Makeup faux pas that most women make….
A- That would be using too much makeup. The natural look is always preferable.

Q: Which colours do you think are a must in a wardrobe? 
A- The basic white and black. Reds and other colours too which are personal choices.

The elegant Tapur Chatterjee happened to be the first female celebrity and only the second to be voted out of Sony’s ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’ but it has done nothing to change her ever smiling demeanor.  In fact the way she bowed out from the show so gracefully leaving anchor Mona Singh actually teary eyed and judge Urmila Matondkar openly expressing grief and shock at her ouster, proves yet again that she is an epitome of class. As for Shiamak Davar, he didn’t need to say anything, his expressions said it all. 

 “I am sad but then I am also happy that I could come this far, thanks to the support of my well wishers. It was a great experience. I enjoyed this completely new experience. I loved the appreciation. Staying back or going was not in my hands,” quips the supermodel. Tapur might not have sizzled in her debut performance but then her second and third performances rocked. So was it the fact the other contestants are from more commonly known fields( TV, films, sports etc) and she being from a field only still acquainted to the elite few, affect her status when it came to the votes?

Explains the Bengali beauty,“The others are very well known in their respective professions, the public know them very well. I come from a very different market. I was kind of new to them. Actually people need time to know somebody a little more.” Unfortunately this was not the case in the show as Tapur was seen for just about three weeks on TV screens. Now she will only be back for the grand finale sometime in December.
 
Interestingly Tapur and her twin sister Tupur (who is 12 minutes younger than her) have been named after the famous Bengali poem by Ravindra Nath Tagore ‘Brishti porey tapur tupur" which means ‘Pitter-patter falls the rain.’ Her moves on the dance floor were no less poetic. Tapur was improving fast and she managed to shine through(not to forget her goodbye performance). That’s why the voting out seemed to be even more surprising. She says, “Actually I loved my third performance the most. I was doing a topple for the first time and it was all new to me, though everybody applauded the second performance the most.”  Really it’s sad that the audience didn’t wait to know her enough!

Very few know that Tapur is the granddaughter of legendary filmmaker, the late Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Apart from such an illustrious background, people now have come to know about her dancing skills. So are movies on the cards? “ “I believe in the saying ‘never say never’. I did get offers in the past. But then they have to be interesting enough.  If at all it happens now, it should have a strong story base. It would be something with a strong Indian background like ‘Parineeta’ or maybe like ‘Black’. As for my grandfather’s movies I love his all his movies. ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Abhimaan’ and Gol Maal are special for various reasons.

Any dream directors she wants to work with? ‘Oh there are so many of them who are doing great work. It will be unfair to single out anyone,” she retorts . But TV doesn’t really interest her. Serials are a strict no no but will she ever turn host, if it’s something interesting? “I can’t say that now. Maybe, if it’s worthwhile.”
 
Tapur is somebody who has achieved it all on her own steam, without really piggy backing on anyone, not even her grandpa’s name. It won’t be understatement to say that this trait is very unlike some of her co contestants on the show.  Now who doesn’t know about serial actors nurturing big Bollywood dreams and same goes for the ones on ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’ who have taken the show as a ladder. Even though they hardly make it there, they look for or have a strong backing in the form of a Godfather and the case is not  different here. Tapur on the other hand was and is on her own. If this girl isn’t a winner, who is?

Q. How would you like to define fashion?
A. Fashion for me is feel good factor with clothes one wear. It has to be well fitting outfits which look beautiful and make you feel free.

Q. Where do you generally buy your dresses from?
A. I like to buy them from outside India only. I feel that Indian clothes are even costlier than the ego of Indian designers. I simply can’t afford them.

Q. Which brand do you prefer the most?
A. There are many brands that I like but I love Karen Miller the most. And not to forget Kwali for their animal prints.

Q. Do you enjoy fashion shows?
A. Yeah. Sometimes.

Q. Who is your favourite fashion designer?
A. No one from India as because their design and price for the designs are quite in contradiction. A rupees ten thousand sari does never look like they worth the money.

Q. The costliest outfit you own…
A. It’s a Moskino.

Q. Your preferable party wears?
A. It’s only salwar suit because it looks very feminine and at the same time very regal, too.

Q. What do you prefer to wear at home?
A. I feel free in track suits only.

Q. Do you have any preference of colour?
A. I look for clothes of warm colours only. But there is no particular colour as such for which I go for shopping.

Q. Any fashion tips for our readers?
A. You may wear whatever you wish but please don’t forget to add a little charm of smile with your outfits. No branded or costly dress can help you look better if you lose in vivacity.

Q. How do you define fashion?
A. I think it’s the change in weather. I would explain it in a way as while designer says that green is in vogue now; people wear everything in green only. If that style is fashion then people accept it as fashion only. But I think people must think of their physical structure before following any fashion or wearing anything. That’s what, I think, is the real fashion.

Q. Where do you generally buy your outfits from?
A. I usually buy everything on my way to somewhere; it may be a journey inside Mumbai or outside the city.

Q. Which brand of outfits do you prefer the most?
A. I mostly prefer to buy dresses of Roberto Kwali and Vasache. When I travel in any other country I like to buy lot of Armani pieces. I generally love to wear branded clothes as they fit on me very well. Branded clothes are like investments to me as I think that a heroine must have lot of clothes to deck herself with. It showcases our lifestyle.

Q. Do you go to any fashion shows?
A. I have not witnessed any of such shows recently.

Q. Who is your favourite fashion designer?
A. If you are talking about Indian look then I would definitely go for Manish Malhotra and Ritu Kumar. And if it’s a matter of western appearance, then my choice would be Rocky S.

Q. Which is your costliest outfit till date?
A. It’s really tough for me to count it now as all my dresses are quite costly.

Q. What do you consider to wear in a party?
A. It has to be something fashionable and simple as well as glamorous, too. I think that I am known for my fashion only and better I don’t ruin my identity by wearing just anything. We make the fashion statements, you know!

Q. What do you prefer to wear while you are home?
A. I feel relaxed in track suits and simple T-shirts.

Q. Is there any special colour that you prefer to buy?
A. To be frank, my personal stylist buys clothes for me. I don’t have so much time to shop my clothes. Besides, shopping is simply headache for me.

Q. Any fashion tips for our readers?
A. Do understand your physical status before wearing anything. Don’t copy anyone blindly. And at the same time listen to all but wear whatever you wish. And I think, that should be the proper punch line of fashion.

Q. How do you define Fashion?
A. Everyone defines fashion in their own ways. Fashion is something which is different everyday. It changes every now and then. People start with a particular trend and everyone follows it and that becomes fashion.
 

Q. Where do you normally shop your clothes from?
A. I shop from anywhere and everywhere. I like shopping when I am travelling, especially abroad. If I am in town then I mostly shop from Bandra and if it’s accessories it has to be from Linking road, Bandra and Colaba Causaway.
 

Q. Which brands do you prefer buying?
A. I am not all that a brand conscious person but if I am abroad then I like collecting branded stuffs.
 

Q. Do you often visit fashion shows?
A. Yes, of course. I have many friends into modeling and from the fashion world and whenever I get time I see one of them.
 

Q. Who’s your favourite fashion designer?
A. It has to be Rocky S and obviously Manish Malhotra. They are so great in their work that they completely transform a person from nothing to everything (Laughs).
 

Q. What was the costliest outfit you have ever bought?
A. I guess it was a sari which priced me around 25K. I have many designer saris mostly from Satya Paul. He creates magnificent sari. I also love collecting sari so that I can wear them after my marriage (laughs).
 

Q. Which is your favourite party wear?
A. My favourite party wear will mostly be a short black dress.
 

Q. What kind of clothes comforts you the most?
A. It is for sure tracks and tank tops. Even a pair of jeans and a top will do.
 

Q. Any particular color you opt for while buying your clothes?
A. I love wearing shades of white. My wardrobe has a collection of all the possible colors.
 

Q. Any fashion tip you would like to give to our readers?
A. Nothing much. But yes I would suggest that wear anything that comforts you. Comfort should be given top priority. Anything that you wear should be good and a person should be able to carry it off well. If he can’t then even a Manish Malhotra costume will look cheap on him.
